About Djirra

We are Djirra. A culturally safe and empowering space where culture is celebrated, stories are shared and practical support is offered to Aboriginal women, especially those experiencing or who have experienced family violence. Our origins trace back to 2002 when we were established as the Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention & Legal Service (FVPLS Victoria). Over time, we have grown, expanded our services and embraced a new identity as Djirra. The name “Djirra” comes from the Woiwurrung word for the reed used by Wurundjeri women in basket weaving, a time when women gathered, talked through challenges and found solutions. That spirit of women coming together to support each other remains at the heart of who we are.

As an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, we are governed by an Aboriginal Board of Directors. We provide legal help, wellbeing programs and cultural workshops, always with a positive and non-judgemental approach. Together, we stand strong with Aboriginal women on their journey to safety and healing.
